Periodontal Treatment

Current treatment for periodontal disease involves scraping dental plaque off the tooth, a procedure called scaling. Root planing is scaling the tooth’s root. Together the two procedures are referred to as “scaling and root planing” or a deep cleaning. The purpose of periodontal scaling and root planing is to remove dental plaque and calculus (tartar), which stores bacteria below the gum line that release toxins which cause inflammation to the gum tissue and surrounding bone. If not treated with a deep scaling, the bacteria will cause gingivitis and gum disease.

After all 4 quadrants are scaled, and in most cases, it is recommended that the patient follows up with a recall appointment every 3 to 4 months to maintain oral health.
